I am fascinated by the drama and colour of every day views. I work directly onto paper or canvas in the field, or, using material from my sketch book and camera, I work in my studio. I need to refine and eliminate fussy detail to get at the essence of my subject. Mostly I use acrylic paint and often add collaged bits, pastel and charcoal into the paint to get to the end result. Quite often I change the colour of my subject in order to shock the painting out of ordinary perception into a new world, one I am so excited by, I want to share if possible.
Painting is what I do and have always done, moving through life, styles and materials, always on the lookout for the perfect mark. I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to share my enthusiasm as a teacher of art, which has given me huge pleasure.
I first studied at the Tunbridge Wells school of Art then at the Central School of Art in the 60’s. I have been painting and teaching since then.
I have lived all my life in Kent.
